Minutes of the Annual Meeting, July 3, 2001 The 91st annual meeting of the Bayville Improvement Association was called to order at 9:17 am on July 3, 2001 by Robert Blakesley following coffee, juice, muffins, and fruit set up by Nancy Wolfram and Alina Blakesley. Julie OBrien-Merrill, Secretary read the minutes for 2000, which were approved as read. Treasurer Jennifer Gilchrist read the Treasurers report with a present balance of $4,999.41. Other officers present were Liz Begonzi and Chris Nielsen. Old Business was first discussed. Chuck Wolfram and Phil Roberts have arranged for an electrician to install smoke alarms at the Community House and the Post Office. Trash cans will again be placed at the dock and the beach for litter control. Chuck Wolfram reported that the overseers had discussed the state of the Community House floor and deemed that it was just fine the way it was. The new signs for Bayville road and Virginia Street are certainly a pleasing addition to the Bayville Village Sign as we enter the community. New Business began with a welcome to the Albaum family as they begin to enjoy their new home in the Glen. Announcements were made to celebrate the birth of Margaret Jane Fletcher in April and the high school graduation of Caleb Parker Merrill. Annual contributions from the Association were approved as follows: $50.00 each to the YMCA, Library, BBH Community Band, St. Andrews Hospital, BBH Police Dept., and the Boothbay Region Land Trust. Gifts of $100.00 to Edwin Harrington for all of his hard work for Bayville and its people and $50.00 to Jeanine Harrington were also approved. Chris Nielsen volunteered to organize the Fourth of July Picnic following the parade at 12:00 noon. Phil reported that there would be a few Bayville musicians and hopefully some other Community Band members, whose music-making is much appreciated by all. The date of July 21st at 9:00 am was set for the annual clean-up day. Particular attention will be paid to the bamboo at the Community Garden as well as any roadside brush needing trimming. Thanks went to Phil and Al Roberts for their dump runs with the brush and to Nancy Coleman for the plants at both the Community House and the Post Office. She announced that, in keeping with Barbara Cooneys book The Lupine Lady, she will put a basket of lupine seeds for people to take to spread far and wide. The Tennis Court seems to be on autopilot with no discussion of repairs needed. It was suggested that if anyone wanted to organize a tournament, to go for it. August 4th will be the date for the Bayville Clambake to be held at the Town Landing with Chris Nielsen volunteering to organize it. Betty LaPointe agreed to handle the money once again. Barbara Allison brought not one, but two, clipboards to the meeting. One was for the Post Office sign-up and the other was for any budding writers who would like to have their work published in the Bayville Column of the Boothbay Register. She explained how easy it was to do, and several people signed up so that the work could be shared in the true spirit of community. Thanks went to the Post Office Fairy who has already been on duty. Jill Albaum and Barbara Allison are working on organizing books and puzzles and asked for approval for some new shelves. Robert Blakesley passed around a notebook as a preview to the Bayville Web site. The present host, On-Line Communities, will only be available until August. It was suggested that the dates for the summers activities be posted, as well as the minutes from the meeting. Robert explained that the web site is an experiment and is anxious for any feedback. Julie OBrien-Merrill announced that the Second Annual Waterfront Festival will be held on Saturday July 14th with time to be announced on a poster, and that any help in organizing activities for all ages would be appreciated. The idea of finding a person or group of people interested in exploring possibilities of historical exhibits of Bayville artifacts, photos, etc. at the Post Office was presented with no interest shown. Robert introduced Dawn Kidd, the Executive Director of the Boothbay Region Land Trust, who gave a brief informative talk on the work that the Land Trust does in the area. She brought pamphlets and maps to share and stressed the importance of educating the various groups who share the use of the land. Bayville and BRLT are now neighbors with the recent acquisition by the BRLT of the Lobster Cove Meadow. There was discussion about the issues of private land that abuts the land that is open for public use. The group indicated there was enough interest to have the BRLT come back to make a Slide Presentation at some point this summer. Date will be announced at the Post Office. Connie Rose suggested that we look into making a Bayville logo that could go on hats or T-shirts. Al Roberts volunteered his wife Becky to work with Lou Mucci and Nancy Briggs on the design. They will contact Harbor Embroidery to see what the cost would be and will make a presentation at the August meeting. Betty LaPointe made a motion that the BIA allocate the funds for the set-up fee and that people can then purchase the items they want. This idea was approved, although Jane Stover wondered out loud if anybody was thinking about keeping Bayville quiet. The Board for the year 2001-2002 was approved as follows: President: Robert Blakesley Treasurer: Jennifer Gilchrist Secretary: Julie OBrien-Merrill Directors: Connie Fletcher, Janelle Morton; Chris Nielsen; and Liz Begonzi (State of Maine Representative) The meeting was adjourned at 10:24. Respectfully submitted, Julie OBrien-Merrill, Secretary
