Minutes of the 93rd Annual Meeting

July 3, 2003

Robert Blakesley called the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Bayville Improvement Association to order at 9:10 am on July 3, 2003. Officers present were

President: Robert Blakesley
Secretary: Julie O’Brien-Merrill
Treasurer: Jennifer Gilchrist
Directors: Nancy Coleman and Liz Begonzi (also State of Maine Representative)

Special thanks were extended to Nancy Wolfram for providing the muffins and coffee; to Nancy Coleman for her continuing beautification of Bayville; to Lou Mucci for the beautiful new Bayville sign at the Landing; to Al, Becky, and Phil Roberts for their work as Garbologists; and to Phil for all of his work in getting the dock and moorings ready.

The motion made by Jennifer Gilchrist that the 2002 Minutes prepared by Secretary Julie O’Brien-Merrill be accepted as posted on the Bayville website and at the Post Office was approved.

Treasurer Jennifer Gilchrist reported a present balance of $4,827.71 in the checking and savings account.

Robert introduced Stu Bither, Wolf Schumann, and Barbara Rumsey from the Boothbay Region Land Trust who came to talk about some opportunities that have recently come up which could involve Bayville. They shared information about the work the Land Trust has been doing, including acquiring Damariscove Island from The Nature Conservancy, Dr. Baker’s Property across from the Ponderosa Campground, and the possibility of acquiring the Giles and Ritall Properties. They showed a map and explained the goal of preserving the Wetlands and habitat of 109 species of birds. They came to find out if people in Bayville (individually or as a community) would be willing to 1) encourage the Land Trust to acquire the Giles property and 2) work with the Land Trust to help with Fund Raising.

Following the discussion of the positive impact this purchase could make for the Bayville, Carter Stafford made a motion that the Bayville Improvement Association supports that efforts of the Land Trust and that we give $1,000 to the Boothbay Region Land Trust to be used for surveying, appraisal, and or purchase costs of the Giles Property. The motion was approved, and a paper was passed around for people to sign up to help work with the Land Trust on this issue.

Old Business:

  • Becky Roberts reported that the last she knew, Joanne O’Connor was working on the Bayville Logo for Hats and T-Shirts. The item was tabled because Joanne was not present.
  • Robert reported that he would like an update of email addresses for the Bayville website at www.bayvillemaine.org and asked for suggestions and contributions for the site. The cost of $84.00 for two years was approved to continue the website. The idea of using the Bulletin Board for discussions about issues such as the Land Trust was discussed.

  • Last year, the Association had given approval to Chris Nielsen to spend up to $200.00 on a basketball hoop. The item was tabled since Chris was not at the meeting.

New Business:

  • Kevin Keegan of Hillside Drive and Barbara and Mark Spencer and Family were welcomed into the Bayville community as they begin their second summer here.
  • Liz Begonzi’s motion that we establish a Flower Budget of $100.00 to be used by Nancy Coleman in the purchase of flowers for the Community House and Post Office was approved. Nancy reported that she puts memorial plants in the Community Garden and work is always needed to keep the bamboo at bay. She suggested that individual cottages add to and take out of the garden. Lupine seeds will be collected in a few weeks for distribution around Bayville.
  • It was with much sadness that people remembered those who had died since we had last convened. We will all miss long time residents Bob Paterson who died August 15, 2002, Robert Lacroix who died November 10, 2002, and Francis Stafford Hunting who died on March 6, 2003. Carter Stafford shared some touching stories of his mother’s last days.
  • Annette Merrill reported the birth of their grandson, Luke Crichton Merrill on April 24, 2003, and Nancy Wolfram reported the birth of their granddaughter Sylvia Catherine Brimak on September 10, 2002. We look forward to meeting these newest Bayvillians.
  • Betty LaPointe told of her granddaughter, Diana LaPointe’s, graduation from the University of Massachusetts. Julie O’Brien-Merrill had news of son Nathaniel’s graduation from Middlebury College.
  • Robert Blakesley reminded people that Harborside Foot Reflexology and Nail Care was open for business, run by Alina Blakesley.

Annual Memorial Contributions and Donations from the Association were approved in the following amounts: $50.00 each to Jeanine Harrington, the YMCA, Boothbay Harbor Police, and the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department; $100.00 each to Edwin Harrington, the Library (for expanded, remodeled building), Boothbay Harbor Community Band, and St. Andrew’s Hospital.

The Annual 4th of July Parade and Hot Dog Roast will be held tomorrow at noon. Volunteers who would like to help should see Chris Nielsen, chief organizer of this event. We look forward to the musical sounds of the BBH Regional Band and a speech by Al Roberts.

Thursday July 10th will be the 4th Annual 21st Century Waterfront Festival, once again organized by Julie O’Brien-Merrill and other Lawn Cottage Merrill family members. There will be a sign up sheet at the Post Office for participants and volunteers. Kids of all ages are welcome to participate and bring a healthy snack to share. Events will include a Kayak Relay Race, Sailing Races, a Running Race – the Bayville .1 K, Scavenger Hunt, Blind-folded Rowing Races, Greased Watermelon Swimming Relays, and a Penny Hunt.

Saturday July 12th will be the Community Work Day from 9:00-12:00. People should bring garden tools, gloves, and other necessary equipment to beautify Bayville. It was suggested that the Bayville Kids set up a Lemonade Stand to quench the thirst of the workers.

Vermont Tennis Resurfacers put a new surface on the Tennis Court this spring. The sign-up sheets are on the "official" bulletin board. Thanks went to Perry Bradley for keeping the court clean and weeded.

The Annual Social Event will be a Pot Luck Dinner on August 2, 2003 hosted by the Merrill Family at Lawn Cottage. Nancy Wolfram offered to get Lasagna and Betty LaPointe offered to collect the money. Alina Blakesley would like to organize a Talent Show at the Community House following the dinner. There will be sign up sheets closer to the event.

There was discussion about who would write the Bayville Beat for the Boothbay Register this year. It was generally agreed that Peter Jordan has written delightful, informative articles, and we asked Ellie Jordan to put in a motherly plea for continued writing. Nancy Coleman offered to make a form that some Bayville Juniors (Merrill and Fletcher girls) will help deliver to cottages to aid in the collection of information.

The next discussion centered around the use of the Community House for Interfaith Patriotic Worship organized by Al and Becky Roberts on Sunday July 6th. A motion was passed that the Community House could be used at 9:30 for this service.

The Bayville Improvement Association Board of Directors for 2003-2004 was approved as follows:

President: Lou Mucci (1st year of 1 year term)
Treasurer: Jennifer Gilchrist ( 2nd year of 2 year term)
Secretary: Julie O’Brien-Merrill ( 2nd year of 2 year term)

The meeting was adjourned at 10:33.

Respectfully Submitted,

Julia O’Brien-Merrill, Secretary
