“She-Who-Loves” with Figures of Speech Theatre

She-Who-Loves is based on a Comanche Indian legend and is inspired by the techniques of Japanese Noh drama. This classic story tells of a young girl who rescues her people from a drought through love and personal sacrifice. The structure and spiritual intent of the tale mesh beautifully with Noh drama, in which music, masks, and narrative underscore an ethereal poetry of the stage. Performed by mother and daughter Carol and Delia Farrell, with extraordinary live music by Andrea Goodman and Carl Dimow, She-Who-Loves  is an exquisitely drawn parable of selflessness, mortality and miracle. "A piece of surpassing beauty... which exists at the intersection of Art and Nature, of Earth and Spirit." Puppetry International

THE RESONANCE RESIDENCE
spontaneous improvised music

The Resonance Residence is an improvising trio. The music they perform is created on the spot and draws on a wide variety of influences: world music, folk music, avant garde, classical composition and jazz. Think sound sculpture and musical conversation. The pieces range from serious to silly – with an emphasis on beauty and resonance.

The musicians are Carl Dimow on flutes and occasional strings, vocalist Andrea Goodman and Mark Tipton on trumpet. They first began working together three years ago and reformed this summer when Mark returned to Maine.

Carl Dimow’s performances range from classical music to jazz and folk music. He is perhaps best known locally as one of the members of the Casco Bay Tummlers klezmer band. Andrea Goodman is an exceptional vocalist who toured internationally for fifteen years with the Meredith Monk ensemble. Since moving to Maine she has worked on collaborations with the Figures of Speech Theater and with Carl Dimow, Barb Truex and other musicians. Mark Tipton is noted for his beautiful sound and for his prolific and creative ideas as an improvisor and composer. Mark divides his time between Maine and New York City, working on projects in both locations. He can be seen every Sunday this fall in New York City, where he is performing with the infamous Reverend Billy’s Tent Revival.

Sacred Songs

SACRED SONGS PERFORMED
AT ST. COLUMBA’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

(2006 Press Release)

Two local songbirds, Alina Blakesley and Andrea Goodman, will perform “Sacred Songs” at the awe-inspiring space of St. Colomba’s Episcopal Church, on Saturday, April 1st at 7:00 pm. They will be accompanied by the talented pianist Barbara Prose. The program is a soul-nourishing combination of classical, ethnic folk and original music.

Alina Blakesley has been taking voice lessons for over seventeen years and is currently studying with Andrea. Alina has performed in many concerts in Maine and in England and Poland. Born in England of Polish parents, her repertoire of classical and Polish folk music connects her with the Polish culture. Her motto is “Look to your roots where you will find a jewel shining bright in your being.”

The concert of “Sacred Songs will include two Polish songs, one about the Black Madonna, which she accompanies herself on the Autoharp and a lively tune on the accordion entitled “Barka” which means boat. She has also selected an English composer, Vaughn Williams’s “Watchful’s Song” from his Pilgrim’s Selection.

Andrea Goodman has a thirty-year career of singing professionally, all over the world, from Carnegie Hall to the Great Pyramid. She is also a composer, a writer and an ordained minister. Her religious background is Jewish and her synagogue provided her first opportunities for performing and writing original prayers.  That has proved to be the seed of her calling, as she currently designs sacred ceremonies, composes music for specific occasions, and helps others to find their voices and their own authentic connection to the Divine.

Two of Andrea’s compositions will be heard in this concert. “You” is the first song she wrote in 1980, an a capella calling song, and “Heavenly Choir” composed in 1994 is a choral piece. She will also sing a Hebrew benediction, which she first performed at her Confirmation at the age of 14.
